The Future of Work Isn't About Technology — It's About Trust
Every conference I speak at has a "future of work" track. Every one of them focuses on the same things. AI. Automation. Remote work. Hybrid models. Digital transformation. Upskilling.
All important. All incomplete.
Because the future of work is not about technology. It never was. The future of work is about whether people trust each other enough to use the technology well.
I spent 20 years at Microsoft and Salesforce building teams, closing deals, and launching products across global markets. I have watched every wave of "the future" arrive. Cloud computing was going to change everything. Mobile was going to change everything. Social was going to change everything. AI is going to change everything.
And every single time, the organizations that thrived were not the ones with the best technology. They were the ones with the strongest trust.
The Trust Layer
Think of it this way. Every technology initiative sits on top of a trust layer. If the trust layer is solid, the technology works. Teams adopt it. Customers embrace it. Partners lean in.
If the trust layer is cracked, nothing above it holds. The best AI model in the world cannot fix a team that does not trust its manager. The most elegant digital transformation cannot survive an organization where people hoard information out of fear.
I call this the trust infrastructure. And most organizations skip it entirely.
They go straight from strategy to implementation. From budget to rollout. From vendor selection to training. And then they wonder why adoption stalls, retention drops, and the ROI never materializes.
The missing step is always the same. Nobody asked whether the humans were ready. Nobody built the trust first.
What I See on Stage
I keynote at leadership summits, association conferences, AI and innovation events, sales kickoffs, and partner events across industries. Healthcare. Financial services. Technology. Consumer. Government.
The problems are the same everywhere.
Teams are disconnected. Not because they lack communication tools. Because they lack trust. Leaders are isolated. Not because they do not have access to data. Because nobody tells them the truth. AI is being rolled out to people who were never brought along. Not because the training was bad. Because nobody asked them what they needed to trust it.
This is what I call relational bankruptcy. It is a state where trust has run dry, people stop feeling seen, and everything becomes transactional. And the terrifying part is that most organizations do not know they are in it until a deal dies, a team quits, funding stops, or an AI rollout fails.
The Currency of Connection
The way out is not another tool. It is not another platform. It is not another training program.
The way out is relational capital. Trust built on purpose. One relationship at a time. Before you need it.
My proprietary Currency of Connection™ framework maps this journey in three stages.
Relational Bankruptcy is where most organizations are today. Trust has eroded. Silos have formed. Decisions flow around people, not through them. AI accelerates the dysfunction.
Relational Capital is the strategic process of rebuilding. Trust built intentionally. Connections made across teams, partners, and customers. Deposits made before you ever need a withdrawal.
Relational Currency is the flywheel. When trust compounds, it directly accelerates deal velocity, team retention, and leadership influence. It works for you while you sleep.
This is the future of work conversation nobody is having. Not which AI model to adopt. Not which collaboration tool to buy. But whether your organization has the trust infrastructure to make any of it work.
The Real ROI
I have seen it from the inside. March 31. 6am. 30,000 emails sent across five countries. Same-day lockout. That same quarter, net income was up 95%. Record profits. They cut anyway. The humans were the line item.
Everyone called it an AI story. It was a trust story wearing an AI costume.
Every employee who stayed, every employee who watched, every employee who read about it learned the same lesson: there is no trust infrastructure here. And every leader who did nothing confirmed it.
The real ROI does not come from the product or the platform. It comes from trust. No matter how powerful the AI or how advanced the tech, connection is what turns tools into transformation.
What This Means for Your Organization
If you are a leader navigating AI adoption, digital transformation, or any kind of organizational change, here is the question that matters most.
Have you built the trust layer first?
Not the technology layer. Not the training layer. Not the budget layer. The trust layer.
Because everything else sits on top of it. And if it cracks, everything above it falls.
AI is commoditizing. Trust is the new moat.
